'Before it's too late...' - BBC reporter shares what Clement must do to avoid Rangers sack

Alasdair Lamont believes Philippe Clement needs to “nurture” the potential of his Rangers team ASAP in order to save his job.

The Gers lost their most recent Scottish Premiership game away at Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October) and failed to close the gap between themselves, Aberdeen and Celtic in the table, resulting in questions being asked about the Belgian’s future.

Writing for the BBC Sport website (23 October), reporter Lamont shared his thoughts on where the manager’s future lies.

“Clement asked for time for this team to gel, to be judged once the new players had integrated a few months down the line. So here we are. He says there is more potential in this group than is obvious right now,” Lamont wrote.

“If he wants to avoid the same fate as [Michael] Beale and Giovanni van Bronckhorst before him, it is his job to nurture that potential and start to turn his vision for Rangers into something the supporters can get behind before it’s too late.”

Calling Rangers underwhelming this season would be a polite way to put things. Clement’s men are third in the league and are six points adrift of their fellow title rivals.

There have always been some question marks surrounding his future as the Rangers boss since the summer transfer window left a lot to be desired.

Clement chose to ship off some of his aging talent to bring in some new blood which saw the likes of Connor Barron and Jefte arrive at Ibrox.

While transfers such as Barron’s and even Robin Propper’s have been mostly successful, some arrivals such as Hamza Igamane’s have been poor.

The Gers’ number nine was a clear problem last term due to Cyriel Dessers’ lack of consistency in the final third and, as nobody strong enough was signed to compete with him, the Nigeria international’s poor goalscoring form has come back to bite them.

Fans are becoming frustrated with the Gers’ inability to win games in high-pressure situations and, if things continue in a downward spiral it could cost Clement his job.
