Rangers are reluctant to sack Philippe Clement because they do not have a chairman and CEO yet, according to Ludo Vandewalle.
The Het Nieuwsblad football chief said via De Insider podcast [19 November] that Clement has been mooted as an option to replace Domenico Tedesco as Belgium’s coach, having worked with the Red Devils’ sporting director Vincent Mannaert at Club Brugge.
He added that the 50-year-old is “under fire” at Ibrox and may only still be at the club due to the lack of a hierarchical structure there.
“The third name mentioned is that of Philippe Clement”, Vandewalle said.
“That is a trainer who is currently working in Scotland at Rangers and is having a hard time there because they are not in the top two.
“In Scotland, it is always Celtic or Rangers in the top two and they are now third, so he is a bit under fire there.
“But they are not firing him, I hear from Scotland because there is no chairman and no CEO at the moment, so they are a bit apprehensive.
“Besides Vincent Mannaert worked with Philippe Clement at Club Brugge for a long time, more than 10 years, so they know each other.
“So it wouldn’t be surprising if Vincent Mannaert went to Philippe Clement and asked if he would want to become the trainer of the Red Devils, but that’s all speculation.
“Those are puzzles that need to be put together and we don’t know if that will be the case, at least not yet.”
Philippe Clement sack update at Rangers drops from Belgium
The situation at Rangers is no secret. John Gilligan took over as temporary chairman after John Bennett stepped down in September, while the CEO position is vacant after James Bisgrove announced his exit in the summer [Sky Sports].
As Vandewalle said, this could very well be the reason Clement is clinging on to his job in Govan.
However, it would be interesting to see what the Scottish Premiership giants do if Belgium come calling for the former Monaco boss.
The Red Devils are reportedly considering sacking Tedesco [Sacha Tavolieri] and might be inclined towards hiring a Belgian coach after not reaching the desired heights under the Italian-German and Roberto Martinez.
Belgium, though, would have to pay Tedesco and his coaches £625,000 plus severance payments to sack them [Sacha Tavolieri].
With Clement contracted to Rangers until 2028, they would have to fork out more money to hire him and this might be why they choose to wait until the Light Blues fire him [Foot News].
This is one to keep an eye on.
