Rangers fans will be able to relate to Czechia after Vaclav Cerny spurned a golden opportunity in their 2-1 win over Georgia in the UEFA Nations League.
Czech outlet iRozhlas wrote in their match report (19 November) that Cerny had a chance to put Czechia 3-0 up early in the second half, but was denied by Giorgi Mamardashvili and hooked three minutes later.
Georgia pulling a goal back just six minutes after his opportunity highlighted just how costly Cerny’s effort may have been, which Gers fans have gotten used to during his time at Ibrox.
iRozhlas wrote: “In the 54th minute, Cerny could have added a reassuring third goal on the opposite side, but Mamardashvili intervened.
“The home team regretted the unconverted chance all the more because the Georgians reduced (the deficit).”
Rangers to remember Vaclav Cerny’s misses more than his goals
While a double save from Liverpool-bound goalkeeper Mamardashvili was needed to keep Cerny at bay on this occasion, his loan spell in Govan has already seen the 27-year-old pull off some glaring misses.
The clearest example of this is Cerny’s shocker against Lyon in last month’s Europa League clash at Ibrox, clearing the crossbar from barely five yards out with the game still goalless early on.
While Czechia were already two goals to the good at the time of the winger’s saved effort on Tuesday, the Light Blues went on to be hammered 4-1 by Lyon with their wayward finishing punished.
Cerny has come up with some big goals so far this season, including winners against Motherwell, St. Johnstone and St. Mirren, becoming the clear first-choice for Philippe Clement on the right wing.
Though he started as a left wing-back against Georgia and was hooked before the hour mark, expect Cerny to be one of the first names on the team sheet when the Gers return to league action this weekend.
In other Rangers news, the club making an internal boardroom appointment showcases a clear lack of ambition at Ibrox.
