Cyriel Dessers is in need of a break at Rangers after looking “pretty frustrated” against St Johnstone, according to Billy Dodds.
The Nigeria international scored seven goals in nine outings across all competitions to start the season but his brace in the win over Dundee in the Scottish League Cup on 21 September is the only match he has scored in over the past seven outings.
Dodds himself knows the pressure of leading the line at Ibrox, having scored 34 goals in 84 games for the Gers between 1999 and 2003 and suggested that he needs some help at Ibrox.
“Dessers looks like a guy who’s in need of a break,” Dodds told Daily Record Sport [12 October].
“He came off against St Johnstone and looked pretty frustrated. For whatever reason, it’s not been happening for him these last few weeks.”
Rangers need help in attack for Cyriel Dessers
Rangers’ trouble at present is while they are blessed with creative talent – the return of Ianis Hagi boosting that further when his suspension is over – Dessers is carrying a heavy medallion as the goalscoring supply.
This is the reason his goals have dried up – he is solely relied upon, and sometimes receives too much criticism for the task he faces.
Another out-and-out goalscorer is needed for a side that creates double figures in chances every single week, with Danilo itching to get back on the field and with a bit of luck can go from strength to strength with both his fitness and form.
Dessers is used to carrying the burden – he is the closest to Alfredo Morelos that Rangers have had since the Colombian’s departure – and those are almighty boots to fill.
The hope is that the international break does the number nine some good, because he will have to hold the baton on his own for a little while longer before Danilo is fully firing, as Hamza Igamane continues to settle.
In other Rangers news, Kenny McLean refuses to go into Ibrox links.
