Finance Expert: Rangers could pocket six-figure windfall after new League Cup developments

Rangers will be in line for a six-figure windfall if they manage to win the Scottish League Cup at Hampden Park this season, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

The Light Blues have booked their place in the semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Dundee before the international break and will face Motherwell at Hampden on Sunday 3 November.

To get their hands on the second piece of silverware of the Clement era, the Gers will have to beat Stuart Kettlewell’s side and one of Celtic or Aberdeen and even then, Plumley admits the financial windfall won’t be major.

“It’s probably still a bigger trophy on the pitch for Rangers,” Plumley exclusively told Ibrox News.

“The prize money is not huge. It’s £400,000 for the winner, you get £18,000 for being on TV for a group game and £30,000 in the latter rounds.

“In the context of Rangers and their overall revenue, it’s not going to shift the balance and it’s not going to be financially lucrative.

“But of course, they’re expected to win trophies and it is still a trophy that they will want to win so it is more about on the pitch and adding to the trophy tally for Rangers than it is financially in that competition.”

When do Rangers next play Celtic in the Old Firm derby?

While the League Cup could be an incredibly important competition in the story of the Light Blues’ season on the field, it isn’t going to be a big game-changer as the Gers look to close the financial gap to Celtic.

Success in either the Europa League or the Premiership is going to be much more important in the grand scheme of things, but winning the first trophy of the domestic campaign is an excellent way of easing pressure on a squad and manager.

Hopefully, the Gers will manage to get past Motherwell in the semi-finals and then beat whoever they have to face in the Hampden Park final.
