Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham will never work with Yves Bissouma at the centre because he cannot run and doesn’t want to, according to Stephen Warnock.
The 28-year-old started alongside Pape Matar Sarr in midfield on Sunday (22 December) during their 6-3 thrashing by Liverpool.
The pair struggled to cope with Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister, with two of them finding the back of the net.
Former Premier League defender Stephen Warnock, speaking on Sky Sports, slammed Bissouma, as well as Sarr, for the lacklustre display.
He said: “If your two fullbacks go forward, your two central midfielders have to sense danger and be able to run.
“They [Sarr and Bissouma] cannot run. They don’t sense danger, so they’re not holding midfielders. So why have you got them playing holding midfield?
“Bissouma yesterday, I’d have run past him. He couldn’t run. He didn’t want to run. He didn’t have the desire to get back and be aggressive with people, and sense that a tackle or even a shove into someone at times is so important”.
After comparing the Spurs duo to Liverpool’s Gravenberch and Mac Allister pairing he added of Postecoglou’s men: “You cannot play that system with them two in midfield.”
Ange Postecoglou is feeling the pressure once again at Tottenham
Football Insider opinion
The North London club have a mountain of injuries and suspensions, including Rodrigo Bentancur. That may be the reason why Bissouma started. But even with their players fit, the form has been less than impressive.
The Lilywhites remain in 11th place after another damaging loss at home. They’ve conceded three goals in each of their last three home matches across all competitions, highlighting ongoing defensive issues.
Despite Postecoglou receiving backing from the Spurs hierarchy amid growing pressure, the fans have made their frustrations clear. They are not impressed with the current state of the team.
However, it’s ultimately Daniel Levy who calls the shots and the Tottenham chairman is probably willing to put the coach in the firing line to shield himself from criticism.
The team has only won three of their last 10 outings. One of those wins was a 4-3 victory against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-final. But even that was under threat after Fraser Forster made two costly blunders.
Postecoglou recently remarked that his role is even harder than being Prime Minister, referencing the constant scrutiny and pressure of leading a club like Spurs.
He likened it to holding an election every weekend, but if the team’s poor form continues and the system doesn’t work with the players at his disposal, he may find himself out of office sooner rather than later.
