Gordon Dalziel has shared his verdict on Rangers defender Connor Goldson’s move to Aris Limassol.
Goldson signed for the Cypriot side on Tuesday (30 June), ending his six-year stint at the Ibrox.
The 31-year-old joins the long list of names to leave the Gers this summer as Phillipe Clement oversees a major squad overhaul but Dalziel believes the club already have a replacement lined up for Goldson.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Tuesday evening, he said: “Goldson would probably be a high earner, he’d have been top bracket, that frees up the wages. If the manager has had a word with the board, if we do get Connor Goldson away that frees up ‘x’ amount of pounds, what do I get for that to bring in that replacement?
“If that conversation (has) been had, I’d be very surprised if they’ve have not got someone lined up waiting to come in.”
Connor Goldson the latest out the door in Rangers rebuild
Rangers are evening out the playing field with Scottish Premiership rivals Celtic and getting some of their high earners out the door to fund their summer rebuild.
John Lundstam and Kemar Roofe left the Ibrox earlier this summer and, more outgoings are expected to follow Goldson, with James Tavernier and Todd Cantwell also looking to secure moves away from Glasgow [Daily Record].
Goldson was a key player for the Gers and has left with SPL, Scottish Cup, and League Cup honors and was a key feature of the side that reached the Europa League final in 2022.
The wages freed up from his departure will be re-invested into the squad, it is unfortunate to lose such an important player but a necessary loss with the Gers wanting to rebuild ahead of the new season.
Rangers’ financial situation has forced them to offload some of their key stars this summer to balance the books and build a side capable of launching an attack on the SPL this season.
The fans will be sad to see a fan favourite leave for new pastures but it was always going to be inevitable in the grand plan of the club this summer, and there will be hope that Dalziel’s words ring true and a replacement has already been identified.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are in talks with a Premier League club over a deal to bring in another new signing with a seven-figure asking price.
