James Tavernier could well be on his way out of Rangers if he is not named among the starters to face Dundee United, according to Kris Boyd.

The Gers skipper has not been a regular in Philippe Clement’s starting XIs this season and it remains to be seen if he will be selected for Saturday’s (23 November) clash at Ibrox.

Amid ongoing talk of an Ibrox exit in 2025 – either in January or the summer – Boyd believes his future could look a bit clearer once the team sheets are released today.

“I’ll be fascinated to see the team lines from Ibrox at 1.45pm to see if he’s in the team to face Dundee United,” Boyd wrote in his column for The Scottish Sun [22 November]

“After this two-week break, there’s no need to rest him. He’ll have had plenty of rest and days off in that time.

“So, if he doesn’t start then I just wonder if it’s the beginning of the end.”

Philippe Clement has big selection call to make for Rangers v Dundee United

Neraysho Kasanwirjo sustained a serious knee injury while away on international duty and is facing a long spell out of action.

Dujon Sterling is being given a chance to shine and it may well be that Clement now gives him a consistent run in the side at right-back.

If that is the case, it will be Sterling’s shirt to lose. Ultimately, though, if he does not perform to the standards expected, Tavernier will be straight back in.

It’s all ifs and buts, of course, but there is a scenario in which Tavernier cannot force his way back into the side and seeks a move away in January.

The ball is very much in the Gers’ court, and they will not rush into any decisions one way or another.

However, even if Tavernier does stick around at the turn of the year, it is looking increasingly likely his time in Glasgow will come to an end at some stage next year.

For now, all eyes will be on that teamsheet when it drops around 90 minutes before kick-off against Dundee United.
