Rangers interim chairman John Gilligan has told Dave King to behave and act like “a proper shareholder” as questions at Ibrox continue.
Speaking in his first press conference as interim chairman following the resignation of John Bennett (23 September), Gilligan said that King had yet to have discussions with anyone in the Ibrox boardroom [David Edgar, 23 September].
King, the Gers’ largest shareholder with a 14.12 per cent stake in the club, has publicly stated in the wake of Bennett stepping down that he would be keen on returning as chairman [talkSPORT, 16 September].
In quotes shared by STV in a post on X, Gilligan said: “There’s just appetite for it at the moment – when Dave was here before and he stepped away, other people stepped up.
“Please, take it below the radar. Really, behave like a proper shareholder, don’t do what you’re doing.”
Dave King Rangers return looking increasingly unlikely
Despite King’s public declarations that he is the man to solve the “crisis” the Gers are currently engulfed in, it appears that the current boardroom isn’t keen on opening a path for his return.
The boardroom is currently understaffed, with Gilligan stepping into the interim chairman vacancy and making clear that his priority is to find a new CEO after months of uncertainty [Chris Jack, 17 September].
James Bisgrove’s departure in May is now many moons ago, as is that of academy director Zeb Jacobs, and these are issues which the new-look Gers boardroom has to address as soon as possible.
A summer marred by uncertainty in staffing, first-team squad composition and the usage of Ibrox itself isn’t too far away from being a crisis, but that wasn’t helped by King’s comments.
Months of inactivity on several issues means that for fans, actions speak louder than words at the moment, and they’ll be hoping any further involvement from King is more than just empty words.
