John Wenham has urged Tottenham to be “careful” not to sign players who could block the progress of some of their promising young talent.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose wants the club to only sign players who will come in and make a “genuine difference”.
It comes after CaughtOffside reported (5 November) that Spurs, Villa and Newcastle United are all interested in Boca Juniors ace Kevin Zenón, who has a £13million release clause in his contract.
Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King has backed the North London side to sign Zenón to compete with Destiny Udogie. However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – isn’t entirely convinced this would be the right move.
“With singings, I want the club to think about not signing players who are path blockers,” Wenham said.
“For example, someone like Wilson Odobert, I’m not sure if he should’ve been signed because we already have Mikey Moore coming through.
“Therefore, I want the club to be careful that if they make a signing, it is someone who is going to come in and make a genuine difference. We shouldn’t be signing players who are going to be a path blocker for the exciting young talent coming through the club at the moment.”
Tottenham to sign Boca Juniors ace Kevin Zenón for £13million?
It is safe to say that Spurs have a lot of exciting young players coming through. However, the only way those players will ever be able to fulfil their potential is if they’re given opportunities to play.
Therefore, Spurs mustn’t overload their squad with signings who aren’t ready for the first team. For example, the recent signing of Alejo Véliz hasn’t exactly been a major success, and some might argue it was a waste of Ange Postecoglou’s transfer funds.
As a result, if Spurs do decide to sign Zenón, they must make sure he is ready to come in and make an impact.
