Brighton owner takes swipe at Everton with PSR claim

Brighton owner Tony Bloom has taken an apparent swipe at Everton and other clubs for skirting spending regulations as he urged them to stop.

Following the Toffees’ deduction of eight points and Nottingham Forest’s four last season for breaking profit and sustainability rules (PSR), Bloom stressed the importance of playing by the rules.

In an interview with BBC Sport [4 July], he expressed discomfort with the Premier League’s predicament but acknowledged the need to enforce regulations.

Bloom said: “I don’t like the idea of clubs having points deducted in the middle of the season. However, if rules have been broken the Premier League has to apply the rules.

“It would be much better if clubs didn’t put the Premier League in the situation where points deductions are necessary.”

Brighton, having posted a record £122.8million profit, face no PSR concerns.

Have Everton done enough to comply with Premier League spending rules?

Following a strategic overhaul that included the early summer sales of Ben Godfrey and Lewis Dobbin, Everton aimed to secure compliance with PSR for the first time in three years, potentially avoiding a third points deduction.

The club had incurred significant losses under PSR in previous years, with a target to limit 2024 losses to under £38m after nearing the £105m threshold over three years.

The club are reportedly quite optimistic about the results, yet clarity on their financial position will only emerge in the coming months.

Everton have been criticised for skirting spending regulations

Everton’s ongoing challenges include managing recent signings’ deferred payments and resolving disputes with the Premier League, underscoring the complexity of their financial struggles despite progress in wage bill reduction and commercial growth.

Let’s just hope the 2024-25 campaign is not dominated by talk of finances in the same way the farcical 2023-24 season was.

In other Everton news, the club have stepped up their interest in Jaden Philogene.
