Carlos Corberan has been a major contributing factor in the constant run of draws West Brom have been on due to his tactical approach, Gareth Ainsworth claims.
Going into their clash with Coventry City on Tuesday night (11 December), the Baggies are unbeaten in their last 11 games.
However, they had also won just once in that time, drawing six straight games prior to a 2-1 win at Hull City, which has since been followed by four more draws.
That has seen West Brom slip out of the top six in the Championship as a result of dropping so many points by not winning some of those matches.
Ainsworth believes that is down to Corberan approaching games in a way that focuses on nullifying the threat of opposition teams, rather than exploiting the ability of his own side.
Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Special (7:56pm) about why the Baggies have drawn so many games recently, the 51-year-old – who recently took charge of League One strugglers Shrewsbury Town – said: “Listen, you win one, lose one it’s better than drawing two, and that’s the adage.
“For Carlos it says a lot about his style. He is a very ‘destroy-the-opposition’ [manager]. He changes his formation in-game a lot of times to suit the opposition, to try and destroy the opposition, but then obviously it sacrifices going the other way.
“And he’s got some good players, [Karlan] Grant, [Josh] Maja up front, [Alex] Mowatt with his left foot. Some fantastic players going forward.
“But he’s very concerned always about the opposition and I think that shows in the 11 draws since September, so not losing since [October], there’s a caveat to that.”
Carlos Corberan must get West Brom winning again

One way or another, it is vital that the Spaniard does find a way to turn these draws his side are recording back into wins.
While an 11-game unbeaten run is impressive, a return of 13 points from 11 games – which the Baggies are currently on – is much less creditable.
There is also a huge amount of expectation on West Brom to be successful this season after making the play-offs during the previous campaign.
A points return like the Baggies’ current one though is going to be nowhere near enough for them to match that which could put Corberan’s position at The Hawthorns under pressure.
That would be a remarkable outcome given even in the past week or so the West Brom boss has been linked with a move to the Premier League with Wolves.
Even so, other clubs have shown you can get wins while also playing in a way that restricts other teams’ attacking threat, so Corberan may find his position at The Hawthorns questioned if he cannot do that.
He is going the right way towards a much-needed three points against Frank Lampard’s new side, with Mowatt’s aforementioned left foot gave the Albion a 1-0 lead at the break with a deflected strike.
