Premier League fans are going to have to fight hard against ticket price increases following the recent Manchester United price hike.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider live event pricing from the US is starting to “infect” the European game.
Man United fans resorted to protest outside Old Trafford earlier this month following a controversial decision to raise ticket prices to £66 per game with no concessionary discounts for seniors or children.
United said the ticket price increases are part of the club’s aim to put themselves on a “stronger financial footing”.
The Telegraph reported on 5 December two-thirds of supporters are “unhappy” with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers’ running of the club.
Liverpool and Man City fans also held banners in a joint protest during their game at Anfield on 1 December after growing frustrated about the ticket price increases at their clubs.
Man United want to bring ticket prices in line with other live events
Borson believes top-flight sides will look to continue increasing their prices to bring them in line with other live events.
He told Football Insider: “We are about to see and have seen already the start of live event pricing from the US in particular starting to infect the European game.
“I saw some of the ticket prices for the West Ham and Liverpool game over Christmas, they were £100 a ticket.
“We have spoken before about some of the Fulham prices for some of their games at £150 a ticket. Aston Villa in the Champions League as well.
“You can understand why there are protests. Man City and Liverpool fans had a united protest about ticket pricing last weekend.
“But this is something that fans are going to have to fight very hard against because the clubs are going to want to push these prices up to match other live events, such as concerts, gigs and theatre.
“Football is not on its own. If you go to the theatre in any major city, tickets are very expensive these days.
“Football is going to want to maximise its revenue from matchday opportunities.
“The longer we can keep things like the £30 cap for away tickets, that’s obviously a very positive development.”
