Everton have been interested in signing Scott McTominay during the transfer window but are not thought to have advanced on any deal, according to Alan Myers.

The Sky Sports journalist responded to a supporter via X on 20 August to downplay the idea that the Manchester United midfielder was a likely arrival at Goodison Park prior to the deadline.

The Athletic reported earlier on 20 August that the Toffees were an option for the Scotland international to leave Old Trafford, but financial restrictions mean the club would have to “get creative” to make it work, so the situation may not be resolved until closer to the window closing.

Talks are said to be “stepping up” over a McTominay exit at United, with Napoli holding face-to-face meetings and Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce interested, but Fulham have moved on.

For Everton, Myers wrote: “There was certainly interest in McTominay but not sure it’s gone any further than that”.

Everton interested in Manchester United midfielder

Sean Dyche has been after another midfielder this summer but missed out on long-term target Kalvin Phillips [Liverpool Echo, 14 August] from Manchester City as he has joined Ipswich on loan despite Everton held talks over a deal [TEAMtalk, 13 August].

Tim Ireogbunam’s performance on his competitive Toffees debut was hugely encouraging though, despite the game ultimately descending into a miserable 3-0 defeat to Brighton.

With a number of other targets such as Chelsea’s Lesley Ugochukwu also now unavailable there may be increased interest in McTominay.

But it is difficult to see how a deal would be possible when The Athletic report Manchester United want £25million, unless Everton are forced into considering a deal for Jarrad Branthwaite.

Everton have an interest in Manchester United’s Scott McTominay.

If Ireogbunam can build on his start at Goodison Park after arriving from Aston Villa then there may not be such a requirement to land a senior midfield option.

But with Amadou Onana’s sale coming on top of Andre Gomes’ departure Dyche could be at the mercy of an injury crisis if left short on numbers.

In other Everton news, a big-name “one to watch” who could leave before the transfer deadline has been named by Paul Joyce.
