'Joke' - Ewan Murray issues verdict on Rangers fans amid 'Miserable' condition of Scottish game

Guardian journalist Ewan Murray has slammed the condition of the Scottish game amid the recent European displays of Rangers and Celtic.

Murray has told Gers fans to remember their 2022-23 Champions League group stage run which saw them endure a humiliating campaign, losing all six games with a goal difference of -20.

Celtic too, suffered a battering at the hands of Borussia Dortmund on 1 October, losing the game 7-1.

Murray wrote on 2 October in an article titled “Celtic’s humiliation exposes the miserable state of Scottish football”: “Supporters of Rangers object vehemently to being lumped in with the European woes of their great rivals. A run to the Europa League final in 2022 and generally strong performances in that environment give them cause to swagger.

“What Rangers would rather ignore is a Champions League campaign of 2022-23 when they failed to gather a point and slumped to a goal difference of minus 20. In August 2023, PSV Eindhoven swatted them aside in a Champions League qualifier.

“Laugh at Celtic, by all means. Ultimately, if you are a Scottish football fan, though, the joke is on you. The national sport’s parlous state provides no cause for comedy.”

Rangers fans are aware of how far behind the Scottish game is

The Ibrox faithful are acutely aware of the dire state of Scottish football, particularly highlighted by their own and Celtic’s recent European performances.

The desire for national superiority over Celtic remains strong, yet the current reality, where even this local dominance is elusive, underscores the broader issues within the Scottish game.

After the disappointment from Gers’ 2022-23 Champions League debacle and Celtic’s recent thrashing by Borussia Dortmund, stark reminders have been served of the gap between Scottish clubs and their European counterparts.

Fans yearn for a structural overhaul in Scottish football, one that might not only restore the Ibrox outfit’s pride but also elevate the national league’s competitiveness, making the dream of outperforming Celtic not just a local rivalry wish but a feasible goal within a revamped domestic and European context.

As long as there’s no adequate money pumped in, players are going to fancy moves south of the border where they not only get paid more but have a higher exposure to climbing the ranks and making it to the elite level of the game.
