'Did we speak about...' - Rangers legend McCoist reacts after receiving award from Prince William

Ally McCoist has become the latest Rangers legend recognised for his achievements and reacted after receiving his OBE from Prince William.

The Ibrox hero received his award at Windsor Castle and posted on X to share the news on Wednesday afternoon [2 October].

McCoist, 62, has received the OBE as part of King Charles’ birthday honours list, recognised for his services to football and broadcasting.

He also hinted that he spoke with Prince William about his team Aston Villa ahead of their historic Champions League match with Bayern Munich.

McCoist shared: “Such a proud moment for myself and my family, I am humbled to be receiving my OBE from Prince William at Windsor Castle today. Thank you for all the support and messages, it means so much. Did we speak about [Aston Villa]? That’s between the Prince and I.”

A universally loved footballing figure across several generations, McCoist’s recognition has come as very popular news.

Now a regular face and voice on national TV and radio, his views tend to be very well entrusted, especially by the Ibrox faithful, whether the claims be grounded or rather ambitious.

The humility of the man shows his clear surprise at receiving the award which comes as far less surprising to most.

TNT Sports’ Champions League coverage host Laura Woods asked him about it on Tuesday night, with McCoist having travelled to the studio even the same day after he had been at Windsor Castle with the Royal Family.

“I’ve been awarded for whatever reasons to whoever, an OBE,” he told Woods [quoted in The Herald, 2 October].

Many will hope the Scotsman’s evident passion for the game and consequent deliverance of his views on it – including events at his beloved Rangers – will continue for many years to come.
