Craig Swan has labelled a potential exit for Rangers star James Tavernier this week as “farcical”.
The Daily Record journalist could not believe it with the likes of Besiktas said to be accelerating their efforts to sign him this week before their later deadline [Fotomac].
Tavernier has said that he’s happy to stay at Ibrox but following his performance in the Old Firm, fans turned on their captain and hurled abuse at him after a poor outing [Tam McManus, 1 September].
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (9 September) Swan insisted that clubs should not be in a position to lose players once their deadline has been and gone.
“It’s farcical that this story can even be around,” Swan said.
“Rangers don’t have to sell of course but it’s ridiculous that that situation could even arrive.
“There will be clubs around Europe that are going to lose players to Turkey and won’t have the ability to go and sign someone because their transfer window is closed.”
Rangers may need replacement for James Tavernier
The sale of Tavernier would have made much more sense during the summer transfer window rather than out of it, everyone knows that.
For what felt like the entirety of the window, the captain was being linked with moves away from Glasgow.
Despite the window now being closed, there are still rumours lingering about where the future of the defender may lie, with Turkish clubs having that later deadline.
This has sparked rumours about potential players Philippe Clement could look at to replace the Englishman, if that were to happen.
Cyrus Christie’s name has been mentioned and it would be a move that makes a lot of sense if it was forced upon the club.
Indeed, the defender is still on the older side as he’s 31 years old but a move seems fairly feasible as he managed to play 27 times in all competitions for Hull City last term and the fact that he’s currently a free agent also helps.
Nothing is yet set in stone, but given everything that is happening, now is not the right time to sell a big-name player like Tavernier.
