Philippe Clement may have to address the future of Rangers captain James Tavernier directly to the supporters, according to the Daily Record.
Writing on their website [10 September] the news outlet has speculated what questions will be asked of the Belgian at the fundraising event for the club’s charity that will take place at Edmiston House.
Clement will host a Q&A at the event and is likely in for an uncomfortable evening on Tuesday [10 September] as supporters will have their chance to field their questions directly to the boss, and are expected to seek clarity on the future of their captain.
Tavernier has been the subject of intense criticism following his performance in the 3-0 defeat to Celtic at Parkhead and, reports have suggested a permanent exit from the Ibrox is still on the cards [Graeme Bailey] with Besiktas among the clubs in Turkey to have been linked [Fotomac].
James Tavernier faces an uncertain future at Rangers
Clement is no stranger to addressing public situations surrounding his players and, if Todd Cantwell is anything to go by [Sky Sports], the Rangers supporters will get clarity on Tavernier’s future should the question be put to the manager this evening.
The right-back has split opinion among fans and pundits alike this season, he received the wrath of the fans following his Old Firm performance and rightfully so, he was the culprit for Dazien Maeda’s opening goal and shied away as his side fell apart at Celtic Park.
However, Tavernier has become the scapegoat for the Gers when the chips are down and, while he is the assigned leader of the team it is not on his shoulders alone to help the side perform when facing superior opposition such as Celtic.
He is expected to be a main feature for Clement in the first half of the season as Rangers look to bounce back from the Old Firm result and Champions League exit and put together a run of form in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League respectively.
As always, the saga will rumble on until the January transfer window when the supporters will have to live the events of the summer all over again with unwanted players still at the club.
Tavernier has suggested his long-term future remains in Glasgow but nothing is a certainty at Rangers. All eyes will be on Clement this evening when he is expected to address the rumours head-on and clarify the future of his Rangers captain.
