Simon Jordan has responded after Jim White admitted Rangers’ record against Borussia Dortmund suggested Celtic could have won in Germany.

Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops picked up their first defeat of the Champions League season as they were thrashed 7-1 on Tuesday (1 October) to leave their hopes of qualification hanging in the balance.

While talkSPORT host White was quick to slam Rodgers’ set-up, he did suggest that the Gers’ win over Dortmund in their run to the Europa League final showed Premiership teams can perform on the biggest stage.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday (2 October, 10:29) White said: “It’s the second 7-1 defeat he’s suffered at the club. That’s on top of a 5-0, a 6-0 and a 7-0.

“Last season they conceded three times in seven minutes in a 6-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid and twice in three minutes against Lazio in Rome.

“Here’s Scott, ‘It’s nothing to do with the standard of the Scottish league, Rangers got themselves to a European final recently beating Dortmund along the way.’ So it can be done.”

Jordan replied: “It can be done, absolutely it can be done. But we do know that the economic might of football clubs does determine more often that not outcomes and we do know that there is a common metric that says, the bigger your wage bill, the more likely you are to be higher up the league.

“If you’ve got a wage bill of £400million like Manchester City have got, you’re likely to have better players and a better team.”

When do Rangers next play in the Europa League at Ibrox?

Rangers don’t exactly have a leg to stand on at this moment in time when it comes to discussing their record in the Champions League, having failed to qualify for the last two seasons.

But the Gers have shown time and time again that they have a knack for performing on the European stage, even when the odds have been stacked against them.

Whether it is the power of Ibrox or just something to do with how they’ve been coached, the Light Blues are able to turn it on during those European nights. For whatever reason, Celtic haven’t been able to do the same.

But Philippe Clemnent’s side will not want to spend another season playing Europa League football. They need to find a way back into the Champions League so that they can have a genuine impact on the European stage.

It’s all well and good harping back to the successes of years gone by such as the win over Dortmund, but the Light Blues will want to produce more nights like that themselves instead of watching their Old Firm rivals falter.
