Chelsea Exclusive: Big Winstanley & Stewart update today

Chelsea co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are “under pressure” from the club’s hierarchy, sources have told Football Insider.

The powerbase of the duo has grown within the football side of club, with the two men being key to Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking at the end of last season.

But they’re now in the firing line of Chelsea chiefs, and a strong team performance this season is seen as essential for them to retain their jobs.

Winstanley joined the club in 2022 from Brighton, while Stewart followed him at the start of February 2023 from Monaco.

They helped play a role in recruiting Pochettino and current boss Enzo Maresca while overseeing an extraordinary signing spree.

After a disappointing 2023-24 campaign, the pressure is now on them with the team’s results this season seen by club chiefs as crucial to them keeping their jobs.

Chelsea must provide improved performances this season

The Blues finished sixth last season in the Premier League, being five points away from Champions League places.

Pochettino also guided the team to the final of the Carabao Cup but was unsuccessful in getting over the line and winning any silverware.

Winstanley and Stewart ultimately persuaded the board to part ways with the Argentine manager and opted to hire Maresca for this season, despite his lack of Premier League experience.

The Londoners currently sit in eighth place after the opening four games this season, having won two, drawn one, and lost one.

Only Man City have scored more goals than Maresca’s side, who will be back in action on Saturday (21 September) against West Ham United.
