Chris Jack shares if he expects Shankland to seal Rangers transfer this summer

Chris Jack does not believe Rangers will pursue a deal for Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland this summer despite previous transfer links.

The Gers were heavily linked with the 28-year-old forward during the January transfer window, though no deal ever came to fruition as the club loaned in Wolves’ Fabio Silva instead.

Shankland is set to enter the final 12 months of his current contract at Tynecastle, having turned down a new deal as he netted 31 goals in competitions last season.

Writing for Rangers Review on Monday (17 June), Jack wrote: “Do I think Lawrence Shankland would score goals for Rangers? Yes. Do I expect him to sign this summer? No. For all the chat and conjecture in January, there was little to suggest that Rangers were going to test the resolve of the Tynecastle board.

“At that stage, Rangers would have had to pay over the odds and it wouldn’t have made financial sense, especially given the outlay on strikers in the summer. His goal return speaks for itself but I think Clement would prefer a No.9 in a different mould.

“There will rightly be interest in Shankland this summer but I don’t expect it to come from Ibrox.”

This will not be an update that Rangers fans will want to hear this summer, especially considering the current striker situation at Ibrox.

While Danilo is set to return from injury soon, Cyriel Dessers has been leading the line for the majority of the season, which has seen him slammed throughout the campaign despite netting over 20 goals in all competitions.

The Nigerian forward is capable of sticking the ball in the back of the net, but it is his all-round play that concerns many, with Clement being urged to replace him during the transfer window.

Rangers may still find a new striker to replace Dessers ahead of the 2024/25 season, but it looks as though the club will unlikely target Shankland.

The Ibrox faithful are well aware of his talents in the final third, having racked up 59 goals and 12 assists in 94 appearances, but fans may have to come to terms with missing out on the star forward.
