Chris Jack shares Rangers striker signing update after Dessers transfer decision made

Rangers are not expected to sign a new striker before the close of the transfer window, Chris Jack reports.

The Rangers Review journalist wrote for the outlet’s website on 27 August that Cyriel Dessers is unlikely to leave the club after turning down a move to Atlanta United in MLS.

As a result of that transfer decision there won’t be another new number nine in at Ibrox before 30 August, with Danilo to be given the chance to fully recover from his knee injury, and summer signing Hamza Igamane still yet to be seen in action.

Sam Lammers was sold to FC Twente earlier this summer, with a deal loan for Wolfsburg winger Vaclav Cerny quickly done to take his place.

Philippe Clement to go without new senior Rangers striker

The club were reportedly ready to offload Dessers to the US but the Nigerian international turned the move down, worth £4.5million [Luca Bendoni, 20 August].

And now, at this stage of the window, it would be a huge risk to do a deal for even that much given how little time it would leave to replace him.

As he is the only fully-fit striker in the squad currently, just as he ended up being for most of last season, he is the one Clement can least afford to lose especially with the Old Firm derby coming up at Parkhead.

A headline striker signing was widely predicted heading into the transfer window after a campaign that fizzled out so disappointingly.

Rangers Danilo
Rangers striker Danilo has had an injury-ravaged time since joining the club.

But despite the once-promising pursuit of Albion Rrahmani from Rapid Bucharest [Football Scotland, 17 June] and factors lining up to allow a bid for Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland [Daily Record, 29 July] it looks like being the untested, and unseen, Igamane who has been added.

The Moroccan was seen as a real coup when he was signed earlier in the window [4th Official, 18 June] but he will have a lot of making up for lost time to do.

Clement has struggled mightily to offload players in order to bring in signings all summer, and is still in the same boat as the deadline nears.

He will have to hope that Dessers keeps up his current form and both Danilo and Igamane can recover their fitness enough to be regular threat, or this could be another long few months until January.

In other Rangers news, a club has emerged looking for a cheap deal to end the Todd Cantwell saga at Auchenhowie.
