Kris Boyd claims Emmanuel Adegboyega should have received a red card as VAR controversy hit Rangers’ win against Dundee United on Sunday 15 September.
In the first half of Rangers’ 1-0 win at Tannadice, Connor Barron was caught by a late challenge from Tangerines defender Adegboyega.
Referee Don Robertson branded a yellow card to the Irish defender, with the decision being finalised after review, which was met with jeers from the travelling Gers fans.
Speaking on Sky Sports Football (12:57pm, 15 September), Boyd and fellow pundit Chris Sutton had mixed reviews on the decision.
The former Light Blues forward said: “There’s probably more contact than what (Benjamin) Kimpioka was sent off for yesterday.
Sutton replied: “It’s a red then is it?”
Boyd responded: “There’s more contact than that (Kimpioka red card.)
“You can see there, he’s going to block this going up the line, I’m not convinced he touches the full-back there, I think he blocks that coming up the line, and he doesn’t touch him.
“He’s (Adegboyega) touched Connor Barron there, and there is a lunge and that looks like excessive force there.
His co-pundit reiterated: “So it’s a red then?
To which Boyd replied: “I think it’s a red card.”
Rangers unlucky to be against 11 Dundee United men
Gers fans made their opinions heard once the VAR check was complete at Tannadice (15 September), and rightfully so.
Barron was fortunate to come away unscathed after a diving challenge took the young midfielder to the ground.
Adegboyega’s yellow card meant that the home side could continue without worry, subbing the 20-year-old at halftime for Vicko Sevelj.
With 11 men on the pitch and a goal behind at the break, the Tangerines mounted a comeback, but Tom Lawrence’s first-half strike was enough to win Gers all three points.
Manager Phillipe Clement will be glad of a win for the Glasgow club, who will be desperate to continue their form as they chase down league leaders Celtic.
The Ibrox side now sit in third place, behind their Old Firm rivals and Aberdeen who are both yet to drop points in the first five matches of the Scottish Premiership campaign.
