Chris Sutton was taken aback when Kris Boyd suggested Rangers defender Robin Propper has looked “soft” since signing for the club.
The Sky Sports pundits were discussing the Light Blues live on the broadcaster’s pre-match coverage of the 1-0 win over Dundee United on 15 September when former Gers striker Boyd questioned the new centre-back.
Sutton couldn’t believe he seemed to be “writing him off” already because the Dutchman has been substituted so regularly.
Boyd said (11.49am): “The centre-back area has been an issue for Rangers and it’s still an issue. I look at Propper right now, he’s gone off three times. He’s been in three games and he’s gone off three times.
“As a defender you want big, strong defenders, go and win the ball, lead by example. The last thing you want is your centre-back going off. Is there a softness there?”
Sutton replied: “It’s a bit early to be writing him off, Kris, come on.”
Philippe Clement signed FC Twente captain to replace Connor Goldson at Rangers
Propper completed 90 minutes in a badly-needed victory at Tannadice but even there he looked anything but commanding.
The 30-year-old former FC Twente captain was supposed to come in and pull together a Light Blues back line that has been plagued by instability in recent years, but so far hasn’t done so.
Connor Goldson’s exit to Aris Limassol during the transfer window probably came at the right time after the former vice-captain’s form dipped significantly.
While it is still relatively early days Propper hasn’t been much of an improvement on even Goldson’s later months, with John Souttar looking the stronger currently.
It clearly can’t be easy for any player to arrive into the disarray at Ibrox currently but the jury is definitely still out on the summer transfer business.
Connor Barron has been a valuable addition from Aberdeen, while Jefte looks decent, and Hamza Igamane has shown flashes of excellence after the long wait for his introduction.
But all three are youngsters and it was supposed to be the illusive senior signings that made the difference this term.
Propper looks tentative, while Vaclav Cerny scored a lovely goal against Motherwell but has yet to complete 90 minutes in seven appearances and missed the Dundee United game with illness.
And after Nedim Bajrami delivered an extremely underwhelming 45-minute debut there will be concerns that Clement has made similar recruitment mistakes as Michael Beale unless there are significant improvements in the coming weeks.
