Ex-FIFA official hails VAR despite Everton controversy at Goodison Park

Noel Egan believes VAR was correct to overturn the decision to award Everton a penalty during their 3-0 loss to Brighton at Goodison Park (17 August).

The ex-FIFA official claims this is a case of “VAR doing its job correctly“.

Everton were initially awarded a penalty after Dominic Calvert-Lewin was adjudged to have been fouled by Lewis Dunk.

However, VAR intervened to overturn the on-field decision, although a second monitor was needed after the main screen had malfunctioned (via Dale Johnson, 17 August).

And Egan – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – feels that the right decision was eventually reached, despite some trouble getting there.

“I’ve had the chance to study it over a few times,” Egan said.

“I have to say that this is a clear case of VAR intervening correctly. The referee was quite far from the incident but he had a clear view of what happened between Calvert-Lewin and Dunk.

“The contact was minimal, and from that standpoint, I absolutely agree with the decision to overturn the initial penalty which was awarded.

“That was VAR doing its job correctly, even though they had to go to two different monitors.”

Sean Dyche and Everton must move on from defeat against Brighton at Goodison Park

Dyche and supporters at Goodison Park will no doubt feel hard done by. In addition, it would have been easy for supporters inside the ground to feel confused after the monitor chaos.

However, now that the situation has been cleared up, fans must accept the decision and move on.

It is hard to deny that the decision to award Calvert-Lewin a penalty would have been a soft one.

Everton were denied a penalty against Brighton by VAR

Therefore, despite some confusion in the lead-up, it is hard to deny that VAR did eventually arrive at the correct decision on this occasion.
