Philippe Clement is not safe from the sack despite putting pen to paper on a new four-year deal with Rangers, according to Chris Sutton.

The Belgian extended his stay at Ibrox on the eve of the new season, where the Gers played out a stalemate against Hearts before securing a 1-1 draw against Dynamo Kyiv in their Champions League qualifier.

While Clement’s new deal is believed to show that the Light Blues are backing the 50-year-old, Sutton believes the second leg against Dynamo Kyiv and the Old Firm clash with Celtic may determine his future.

As quoted by EPL Index on Thursday (8 August) he said: “Clement’s new deal sent a message but the upcoming games against Dynamo Kyiv and Celtic are crucial.

“They could determine his future, regardless of the new contract.”

Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement if they lose to Celtic?

Rangers have sacked too many managers over the last few seasons as they look to close the gap to Celtic and it does feel as though that has to change if they want to reclaim the Premiership title.

The constant change in the dugout partnered with the need to rebuild the playing squad season after season means that the Light Blues always seem to be starting a few steps behind their Glasgow rivals.

However, being second best is never good enough at an Old Firm club and unless Clement’s side book their place in the Champions League and win the first derby of the season, the pressure will be straight on the Belgian.

Michael Beale was seemingly fairly secure at the start of last season, but the miserable start to the European campaign, partnered with a defeat against the Hoops at Ibrox put him straight under pressure.

Even if Rangers want to change the culture around sacking managers, the fans will still continue to have a major say and should Clement lose the two games that Sutton earmarked, his exit cannot be ruled out.
