Rangers have the biggest week of their season so far coming up, as Andrew Smith claims Philippe Clement is on “death row” at Ibrox.
The Scotsman journalist Smith has explained Clement is one of many managers who will always find their job under some degree of threat.
Gers currently find themselves 14 points behind Premiership leaders Celtic and face Ross County on Sunday afternoon [8 December], before a titanic Europa League tie with Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham and an Old Firm League Cup final within the next week.
“I always kind of think where Clement finds himself. To me, it’s the old football manager’s death row,” Smith said on the PLZ Football Show [7 December].
“Every game you step out onto the pitch, that’s your appeal to the authority not to flick the switch on the electric chair.
“I’ve seen so many clubs say they’ll support the manager, then within three weeks, if they’ve not won every single game, they’re gone.”
Philippe Clement on Rangers ‘death row’?
One has to be a hardened figure to lead Rangers, and that is something Clement can be credited with.
The Belgian has overcome different elements of adversity since arriving at Ibrox – many of them out of his control – and has had to contend with a hierarchical structure which has been anything but settled.
Throughout his stint in Govan, he has also had to watch Celtic act with the organisation he wishes he could experience more of himself, while spending fees as high as £11million on transfer arrivals.
Rangers’ recent AGM with over 1,500 shareholders keen for answers in tow saw many truths come to the surface, including the paltry sum the club received for several of their outgoing players in the summer.
The Copland Road debacle was also discussed. Plenty was laid bare, which served as stark reminder to fans of how bad things have got, but also that they can be recognised and rectified is an encouragement.
Clement emerged from the meeting having avoided any major difficulty, as did John Gilligan. The coming seven days, the festive period and then the January transfer window constitute a massive period in the future of Rangers.
In other Rangers news, Kris Boyd has blasted one “unreliable” senior player at Ibrox.
