Rangers will not be put off by a potential big-money contract payout should they decide to part ways with Philippe Clement.
This is according to former Man United chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the club agreed to a set termination fee when the boss signed his new contract.
That fee is said to be “a lot less” than the sum of the contract.
Concerns had risen amongst supporters that Clement’s dismissal may be delayed by the club’s financial situation given the potential payout that would come with terminating his deal.
Rangers handed the manager a new contract during the summer transfer window to extend his stay at Ibrox until the summer of 2028.
However, Brown has insisted that the club would have ensured they were covered for that situation during the contract negotiations.
It was explained that the payout is not based on an amount owed to Clement, but is set at a previously agreed number which will be more favourable to the club.
Pressure on the manager’s position has been growing after a 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock meant Rangers have failed to win in six of their 14 games across all competitions.
Those results have seen the club drop six points below Celtic and Aberdeen in the league, while they were knocked out in the first Champions League qualifying round.
Rangers to make Philippe Clement sack decision after contract twist
Football Insider revealed on 21 October that the club are preparing to part ways with Clement amid growing concerns about the club’s position and performances.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience working closely with managers including a spell as Sir Alex Ferguson’s number two, insisted that
“They’ve tried to do everything on the cheap because they haven’t got any money,” he told Football Insider.
“Most of the time, the payout is written into the contract when it’s signed.
“It’s not as simple as somebody earning £3million a year has two years left so they get paid £6million when they get sacked.
“Rangers won’t be too bothered about that. If they decide they want to terminate his contract, they will.
“I’ve heard that that fee is already agreed, and if they decide to sever the contract they’ll have to pay him a specific sum of money.
“That fee is a lot less than the sum of his contract, so they’ve taken care of that issue.”
In other news, Rangers fans fumed at Clement’s comments about Jack Butland.
