Seamus Coleman believes Dwight McNeil is “emerging as a leader” for Everton this season.

The attacker has been in stellar form this season with his “monstrous” performance against Crystal Palace in the Toffees’ 2-1 win at Goodison Park the main reason behind why they got their first Premier League win.

The former Burnley man has been used in a more central role this term and Coleman believes this new position is one of the reasons why he’s thriving.

“We all know at Everton what Dwight has got in his locker and his two goals [against Palace] were top drawer,” he said to the Liverpool ECHO (8 October).

“He is enjoying the more central role he has been given and he’s emerging as a leader in the pack, always keen to take responsibility and get himself, and us, on the ball”.

Dwight McNeil could be the saviour Everton need

The Toffees’ season up until now has been fairly lacklustre with the likes of McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye among those to stand out from the pack.

Granted, Sean Dyche has been without star man Jarrad Branthwaite for most of the term due to the injuries he’s sustained but the 22-year-old shouldn’t be relied upon each game to carry the team on his back.

Dyche’s use of McNeil in a central role has unlocked a new version of the attacker that seems to play free-flowing football and has made him the focal point of most of their attacks.

In fact, as per Fotmob, the former Burnley man ranks third in the Premier League for big chances created this season (7) behind both Cole Palmer (8) and Bukayo Saka (12).

The fact that McNeil is even getting included in the conversation with players of this calibre shows how important he is to Everton.

If Dominic Calvert-Lewin can find his scoring boots or if Armando Broja returns and manages to start firing straight away, the Toffees could find themselves more than safe from another Premier League relegation battle.

In other Everton news, Asmir Begovic has shared a transfer admission about his return to Goodison Park.
