Jim White and Danny Murphy have clashed over Rangers’ European success after Celtic were thrashed by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
Brendan Rodgers’ side slipped to an embarrassing 7-1 defeat in Germany on Tuesday (1 October) night to put their hopes of qualifying for the round of 16 in doubt after just two matches.
Although talkSPORT pundit Murphy was quick to praise the Light Blues for their recent record in the Europa League, host White insisted that questions had to be asked of their Champions League displays.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday (2 October, 10:36) White said: “All sorts of questions being asked about why this continuously seems to happen to Celtic and Rangers for that matter.
“Don’t think they’re getting a pass out of this.”
Murphy hit back saying: “They’ve done well in Europe recently, come on.”
White replied: “They got to the final against Eintracht Frankfurt and lost it.”
Murphy responded: “But they did alright last year.”
White then said: “Rangers of course beaten 7-1 at home by Liverpool, that shouldn’t be forgotten and it’s not forgotten.”
Why didn’t Rangers qualify for the Champions League at Ibrox?
While the Gers may have also struggled in the Champions League, they have been Scotland’s most consistent and impressive team on the continent for a number of years now.
Of course, most supporters would much rather see Philippe Clement’s side secure the riches of the Champions League, even if it meant crashing out early, but their record in the Europa League is very respectable.
Had they got their hands on the title against Frankfurt, nobody would even be comparing the two Old Firm sides’ achievements on the continent in recent years.
It is unfair to drag the Light Blues into this argument after Celtic have been embarrassed.
Questions do need to be asked however as to why both of Scotland’s biggest teams are failing to even compete on the biggest stage.
It isn’t good for either side and something needs to change sooner rather than later.
