Kris Boyd makes Rangers, Celtic title prediction after CL humiliation

Kris Boyd has given his verdict on the Scottish Premiership title race between Rangers and Celtic after the latter lost 7-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (2 October, 10:04am), Boyd said that despite their humiliation on the continent by Dortmund, he still thinks Celtic will beat Rangers to the league title.

Acknowledging that the Gers’ Old Firm rivals are also favourites in both of Scotland’s domestic cup competitions, Boyd did say that Tuesday’s (1 October) heavy loss could have been even worse for Celtic.

He said: “[Celtic] will still win the league. They’re the favourites to win both cups as well.

“But once again, despite being very optimistic, last night’s performance brought them right back down to reality – it could easily have been a lot more [than seven goals].”

Rangers must take advantage of Celtic’s European humiliation

Regardless of which way one leans on the Old Firm scales, it’s almost impressive to see a side win their European opener 5-1 and still end up with a negative goal difference 90 minutes of football later.

Philippe Clement’s Gers also got off to a winning start in their European campaign, recording an impressive 2-0 win at Malmo, but will be wary of repeating Celtic’s woes this time around.

The Light Blues host Lyon on 3 October in their next Europa League match, with Clement hoping that a raucous Ibrox atmosphere can help his side make it two wins from two on the continent.

Their 2-0 victory in Malmo was the third of four wins and clean sheets in a row across all competitions, and if the Gers want to close the five-point gap on Celtic in the Premiership, this form must continue.

Celtic’s defeat in Dortmund will leave other Scottish sides smelling blood and looking to take advantage of their evident vulnerabilities, and no side will be more keen to exploit those weaknesses than Rangers.

In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson didn’t hold back in his assessment of the club’s conduct towards one out-of-favour player.
