Todd Cantwell is not having a medical at Blackburn ahead of a permanent move from Rangers, according to John Eustace.
The Rovers boss issued a transfer update on 29 August ahead of the close of the window a day later to indicate that “nothing” was imminent and nobody was having test ahead of signing, despite various talks.
The Athletic reported earlier on 29 August that advanced talks were taking place over a £500,000 deal for the wantaway Englishman with a medical set to follow either later the same day or early on deadline day, but while the Lancashire Telegraph (29 August) indicated the move was “heading in the right direction” Eustace poured cold water on it.
He said, via the Lancashire Telegraph: “There’s nothing at the moment, the recruitment team are in discussions with a number of players and we’ll have to see what happens.
“I don’t believe anyone is having a medical, that I’m aware of. I think the most important thing is that we get the right players in.
“If there are any that come in and we think they can play and they beat the deadline, then great. If not, it’s most important we get the players in before the transfer deadline.
“The club are trying their hardest and they’re working their socks off. I am happy with that.”
John Eustace pours cold water on Rangers signing
Eustace may just be taking an extremely cautious line ahead of the deadline in order not to jinx any potential deals but anything that puts the Cantwell move in jeopardy is a concern at Ibrox.
The 26-year-old’s request to leave the club, and subsequent lack of matches even for the B Team, has angered Light Blues supporters and been branded “disrespectful” to his Gers teammates by Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson.
Philippe Clement is going to have a big issue to deal with if Cantwell isn’t moved out ahead of the deadline, with a pay off and a contract termination already suggested as the likely alternative [PLZ Soccer, 26 August].
If Eustance says nothing is imminent at the English Championship it does suggest that any Cantwell deal is going to be an 11th hour one on the final day of the window.
At best that leaves Clement with precious little time to use the, admittedly minimal, transfer proceeds to secure a replacement.
So while the fanbase will be anxiously awaiting new arrivals before 11pm on 30 August there will also be a focus on progress towards ending the unhappy situation with Cantwell in time.
