The Friedkin Group will have Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s contract situation high on its priority list once their Everton takeover is completed, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
Farhad Moshiri has agreed a deal to sell his controlling stake at Goodison Park to the Roma owners, with a deal expected to be completed before the end of the year with some elements outside of TFG’s control [Ben Jacobs, 26 October].
Calvert-Lewin’s current deal on Merseyside expires at the end of the season and while Plumley doesn’t expect a solution to be found before the takeover is completed, he believes the Friedkin’s arrival could help negotiations.
“It can be beneficial, I think that’s the best way to phrase the answer,” Plumley exclusively told Goodison News.
“It depends on a number of factors. It is certainly something that you would imagine the new ownership is looking at very highly on their priority list.
“What are all the squad’s contracts looking like? Which ones are close to renewal and how do they want to structure that squad moving forward?
“There is the player’s consideration as well within that. Is the player looking at what is happening next with the ownership group? Are they wanting to see what’s going on before they make a commitment?
Will Dominic Calvert-Lewin exit Everton amid Goodison Park takeover updates?
“Then you’ve got the overlay of what new ownership may or may not do with the managerial set-up and the backroom staff, the boardroom staff and the model that they want to employ.
“As a result, everything is just a bit up in the air and there’s a bit of a waiting game to be played on both sides.
“There’s nothing stopping them from having those conversations really early and it will then come down to finance, but you do get this moment of everybody looking at each other in the club when takeovers happen.
“What is going to be the direction of travel? What is it going to look like and that will be where you get some of these instances at the minute where deals are not being done right now because this needs to play out to see what it looks like.”
The Friedkin Group will have plenty of tasks on their to-do list when they arrive at Goodison Park, including making a decision on Sean Dyche’s future as he enters the final months of his contract.
While there won’t be many easy calls to make for Everton’s new owners, they will be eager to put their mark on the club quickly once they finally gain control on the blue half of Merseyside.
