Hamza Igamane is “determined to become a big player” for Rangers having now joined in team training after his summer move, Philippe Clement has confirmed.
The Belgian delivered an update on the Moroccan striker in his 12 August press conference to say that the youngster is starting to show the same qualities that convinced the club to bring him in from AS FAR Rabat this summer.
Igamane was confirmed as a Gers player on 5 July but was not even seen in training for around a month as rumours of a serious injury were denied [4 Lads Had A Dream, 30 July].
But Clement has suggested that the 21-year-old may not be far from being involved in some capacity, having not even named him among the substitutes throughout preseason.
He said, via Rangers Review: “Hamza is doing part of the training with the group, so step by step he is going to the physical level that we need in training and later in the games.
“He is showing a lot of interesting things with the ball, which we saw from him in the games we saw in Morocco.
“He is settling in well. And with the language he is starting to learn his first English words and he is feeling really happy and grateful to be here. He is very determined to become a big player here.”
Rangers yet to see Hamza Igamane in action
It certainly doesn’t look like Igamane’s introduction to Glasgow has gone to plan after the club prevented him from going to the Olympics, apparently in the hope of getting a fast start.
That may have risked upsetting him but it appears he wouldn’t have been able to take part anyway if he has only recently been deemed fit enough to join in training with the first team.
Why he was so far off is yet to become clear, with even Clinton Nsiala present on the bench against Ajax in preseason.
Fans will hope that Igamane develops into a star, and there are high hopes for him, when the Scottish Sun reported on 22 June the deal to sign him was for £2.5million.
Clement could have done with that cash to land senior additions in recent weeks rather than start the campaign with an understrength squad.
The Light Blues now appear to be trying to sign another young striker in Mahamadou Diarra [Africa Foot, 12 August] with Cyriel Dessers currently the only fully-fit centre-forward.
But if Igamane could join the action sooner rather than later it would be a major boost, with Danilo also still working his way back from injury.
