Confirmed: Rangers goalkeeper leaves on loan in past few hours

Rangers have confirmed that Jay Hogarth has left the club to join Queen of the South on loan for six months.

The Light Blues revealed via their website on 3 July lunchtime that the 20-year-old is set to continue his development in League One until January, having spent the second half of last season a step lower in League Two with Dumbarton.

The Daily Record had reported on 1 July that the goalkeeper also had loan interest from Arbroath and Kelty Hearts but Queen of the South have got their man.

Hogarth follows teenage keeper Jacob Pazikas in departing the club on loan this summer, with senior option Jon McLaughlin’s contract having expired and number two Robby McCrorie also expected to leave [Daily Record, 4 June].

Amid something of an exodus of permanent and temporary goalkeeping exits in Glasgow this summer the club have brought in Liam Kelly after his departure from Motherwell.

The 28-year-old returns six years after his initial permanent move to Livingston and has yet to make a senior appearance for the Gers.

He also made a pair of loan moves during his previous time in the Rangers set up so even if Hogarth isn’t in line to break through to Philippe Clement’s first team any time soon he may end up being a future option one way or another.

The club have something of a logjam of homegrown keepers who have not had opportunities to make an impact at Ibrox, with McCrorie set to leave after almost as many loan spells (five) as games (seven) by age 26.

Robby McCrorie is likely to be the next goalkeeper to leave Rangers this summer.

Kieran Wright is just a year his junior and has never featured for the Rangers first team while spending time on eight different loans, and has also been tipped to leave by Rangers Review’s Chris Jack and Derek Clark as a result (5 June).

Hogarth is some way off that point but will surely need a clearer decision made in the next couple of seasons as to whether he will make the grade at Ibrox or not.

In other Rangers news, a Todd Cantwell exit update has emerged in the days after he hit out at a supporter online.
