Lee Carsley has been tipped by Alex Crook as a potential contender to replace Sean Dyche as Everton manager.
Dyche’s current deal at Goodison Park expires at the end of the season and there is an expectation that prospective new owners, the Friedkin Group, will want to appoint a new manager this summer [Phil McNulty, 4 November].
While several names have been backed to make the move to Merseyside, talkSPORT journalist Crook has suggested Carsley could be a contender having impressed as interim manager of England.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (8 November, 11:12) he said: “I hope for his sake that the debacle against Greece and it was a debacle, admitting as he said that he only tried the new system for 20 minutes, I hope that doesn’t harm his chances of getting a Premier League job for example.
“I think at one stage if Everton look to move on from Sean Dyche, with his connections to that football club, he may have been a contender. I hope he’s not done himself too much damage with that Greece game.”
Will Sean Dyche exit Everton amid Goodison Park sack speculation?
He may not be the most exciting of names linked with the manager’s position at Goodison Park, but appointing Carsley would make a lot of sense for the Toffees.
The temporary Three Lions boss has ties to the Toffees and while the majority of his experience has come at youth level, he has a track record of developing players and helping them when silverware over the course of his career.
Whether or not he would be able to transfer those abilities into the Premier League is another question. As Crook suggests, questions will be asked of the former Irish international, especially after England’s dreadful defeat to Greece in the October international break.
While the Friedkin Group’s takeover hasn’t yet been completed, they will likely already have drawn up a list of potential Dyche replacements as they prepare to embark on a new era at Goodison.
Only time will tell if Carsley’s name is one of those included on that shortlist.
