Newcastle United are not willing to let midfield star Sean Longstaff walk away from the club on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.
The 26-year-old is out of contract at St James’ Park at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
Longstaff remains a key man in midfield for Eddie Howe’s side despite their big-money transfer activity in recent seasons.
He kept his place in the starting lineup for the win against Wolves on Sunday (15 September) with Sando Tonali forced to settle for a place on the bench.
Sources say Newcastle feel it would be “bad business sense” to allow Longstaff to leave the club on a free transfer.
As things stand, the 26-year-old can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in the January transfer window.
Newcastle want to prevent Longstaff leaving for free in 2025
Longstaff is a favourite with the Magpies fans after coming through the club’s academy ranks.
He has started all four of Newcastle’s Premier League games this season and was a second-half substitute in their League Cup victory over Nottingham Forest.
The midfielder – who was a virtual ever-present in the 2023-24 campaign – has turned out 187 times for the Tyneside club, notching 16 goals and 10 assists.
Longstaff signed his last contract extension at St James’ Park in May 2022, months after the Saudi-backed takeover.
