'Contrary to reports...' - Journalist issues update on Rangers behind-the-scenes move for 25/26

Rangers are swapping Castore for Umbro and not actually dumping them, according to Jon Rest.

The Sport Business journalist reported on 23 December that the change is part of Castore’s “brand-segmentation” strategy.

This year, Castore had announced a deal with Umbro licensee, GL Dameck, to sign as the exclusive sub-licence holder in the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands and Denmark.

Via X, Rest wrote: “Rangers is swapping Castore for Umbro, while England Rugby is doing the opposite. Contrary to reports, no brand has been dumped. It’s all part of Castore’s ‘brand-segmentation’ strategy.”

Rangers could look to enhance their appeal with Umbro

This transition seems to be embedded within Castore’s broader strategy, which involves diversifying their brand portfolio by leveraging partnerships with other sportswear giants like Umbro.

For Gers, this change means they will continue to benefit from high-quality sportswear, but under the Umbro brand, which has a storied history in football, potentially enhancing the club’s traditional image and appeal.

The move does not indicate any negative severance with Castore but instead, highlights Castore’s business acumen in expanding its market presence across Europe by managing multiple brands.

This strategic shift could offer fans new designs and potentially better quality products, given Umbro’s legacy in crafting iconic football kits.

Moreover, this arrangement could lead to innovative marketing strategies and enhanced visibility for the Ibrox outfit, aligning with Castore’s goal to grow in elite sports markets while maintaining strong ties with their current partners.

In other Rangers news, the club have made contact to seal the transfer of a striker currently leading the Golden Boot race.
