Ian Crocker and Neil McCann were left wowed a cruical interception James Tavernier made for Rangers in the first half of their Scottish Premiership game against St Johnstone on Sunday.
The game was 0-0 at half-time with the clash fairly even for both teams with each getting the odd chance on goal.
Tavernier managed to put his head on the receiving end of a cross from Jack Sanders and managed to cut the ball off just before it got to the head of a Saints player to help keep the scores level.
Speaking live on Sky Sports Football (1 December, 12:10pm), Crocker and McCann shared their thoughts on Tavernier’s interception.
“[James] Tavernier’s interception was crucial with [Benjamin-Mbunga] Kimpioka waiting,” Crocker said.
To which Neil McCann replied: “It was, they were raising the centre-backs into a wide position and it was a brilliant cross from [Jack] Sanders.”
James Tavernier may be staking his claim for the Rangers right-back spot again
Philippe Clement chose to start quite a different team against St Johnstone from what fans saw the Gers line up with against Nice in their 4-1 Europa League win on Thursday and so far, they’ve been fairly solid.
The Englishman has been replaced in his right-back role by Dujon Sterling in recent weeks but with the former Chelsea man being ruled out of Sunday’s game due to injury, Tavernier was afforded the chance to come into the starting XI.
His link-up play with Vaclav Cerny so far has been stellar and the two have made the right-hand side of the pitch their own with no St Johnstone players coming remotely near scoring from their side.
Alongside helping out in attack, Tavernier has been confident with his defensive work and has helped ensure that the Gers’ backline isn’t broken down, even if Robin Propper is having yet another howler.
There are still 45 minutes left to go in the game, and if Rangers manage to get a lucky break and Hamza Igamane can find himself in a strong shooting position, Rangers could easily leave McDiarmid Park with all three points.
