Cyriel Dessers makes Rangers exit decision, happy with personal terms - reports

Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers has decided to hand in a transfer request at Ibrox this summer, according to Soccernet.

The Nigerian source reported [25 June] that the 29-year-old is looking for a way out of Ibrox, with Dessers said to be in talks with Greek side PAOK over a summer transfer [Novasports].

It is understood that the striker is being seriously considered and discussions are at an “advanced level”, with Dessers happy with the financial offer the Greek club has submitted.

Dessers has been greeted with a mixed reaction during his first season in Scotland, having reached 20 goals despite a slow start to the season under Michael Beale.

The forward certainly hit a new gear once Philippe Clement arrived as the new manager, but that has not stopped people from criticising the striker’s all-round play, as well as his conversion rate.

Even with his decent goal tally, the striker went missing in several matches and spurned multiple chances to win games for the Gers, something that fans have become accustomed to at Ibrox.

With Danilo returning from injury, and Hamza Igamane closing in on a deal, Dessers is likely to be the third-choice striker next season, which is not an ideal situation for the player.

Clement is currently in the middle of rebuilding the Rangers squad, flushing out the deadwood that Beale brought into the club last summer, and Dessers might have been a victim of that anyway.

While the forward was always critical of himself, even before the media and pundits made comments, those same faults do not seem to be disappearing anytime soon, and he could be wanted at another club.

Given some of the comments aimed at him throughout the 2023/24 season, it is understandable as to why he would rather move away from the club than attempt to win the fans’ hearts back next term.
