Dan Bardell: Tottenham ready battle to sign striker who instantly betters them

Dan Bardell believes Brentford may run down the contract of Ivan Toney this summer as Tottenham Hotspur go head to head with Chelsea and West Ham United.

A report from Football Transfers (18 June) that Spurs have already had a bid rejected by the Bees for the Englishman this summer.

They have suggested that Toney has agreed on personal terms and a wage offer from Tottenham but an initial bid of £40million was turned down.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has suggested that Brentford will consider their options before selling the 28-year-old to Spurs.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell: “It feels like Tottenham will be battling Chelsea and West Ham for him this summer.

“Spurs are the only one out of those who don’t have a recognised centre forward so he could be a good fit. He has a year left on his contract and seems keen to leave, everyone knows that.

“It would depend on what Brentford want, they may look at it and keep him for a year and let him go on a free.

“If Spurs can stomach the fee they could demand they should go for it as he would instantly make their squad better for a busy new season.“

Ange Postecoglou doesn’t have a true number nine and utilised multiple players in that position throughout the season.

With the likes of Hueng-Min Son, Richarlison and Timo Werner, there were a variety of options for him to choose from.

This summer he could do with a new recognised striker who can score goals regularly and give Spurs another dimension for the new campaign.

Toney is an England international who had a slow end to the Premier League season after missing half the season through a betting-related ban.

He would certainly add a physical presence to the Tottenham front line which would give Postecoglou a different option depending on the opposition.

With a year remaining on his deal Brentford, Spurs could potentially get away with paying a cheaper fee than they might have previously.

With West Ham and Chelsea already interested in signing him, there could be an interesting battle on throughout the summer.
