Pundit View: Rangers may have signed new 'Legendary' Ibrox player while exit mooted

Former Ranger player Danny Miller has tipped new signing Hamza Igamane to become a legend but expects the club to sign another forward.

Writing for the Daily Record (7 July), he backed Rangers to move for another forward to ease the burden on Igamane and cast doubt on the future of Cyriel Dessers.

Dessers has been linked with the Ibrox exit in recent weeks, with clubs abroad said to be showing an interest.

Miller said: “Hamza Igamane might make Rangers a lot of money in the future. He could go on to become a legendary No.9 at Ibrox. But right now, to ask a 21-year-old Moroccan kid to take the weight of that jersey on his shoulders?

“That would just be unfair. And that’s why, irrespective of Igamane arriving on Friday, I still expect Philippe Clement to sign another centre-forward in this transfer window. That might mean Cyriel Dessers leaving the club. There are plenty of rumours going around about teams being interested and his potential departure.”

Rangers target firepower as Hamza Igamane compared to Alfredo Morelos

The signing of Igamane continues Rangers’ recruitment strategy of targeting young talent with high potential.

Igamane scored seven goals and provided three assists for FAR Rabat in the league last season.

Clement clearly sees a lot of potential in the player, moving to bring him in from Morocco and denying his participation in the national Olympic side (Morocco World News, 5 July).

Miller made comparisons to former Gers player Alfredo Morelos, who he shared a dressing room with during his third spell with the club.

Morelos signed from HJK in Finland and would go on to become Rangers’ all-time top European goalscorer.

Such a comparison will only add to the pressure of a young player swapping Morocco for Scotland, and Rangers will need more if they are to topple the Celtic stronghold on the division.

Dessers scored 22 goals in all competitions last time out, with 16 of those in the league as he finished fourth in the top-scorer charts.

That is a goal return that has attracted the eyes of others clubs, with Rangers seemingly willing to sell to fund a move for a more seasoned attacker to compliment Igamane.

Miller named SPFL top scorer and Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland as the man to lead the Gers frontline next season.

The 28-year-old notched 24 goals in the league for Hearts, who finished 17 points behind Rangers in third.

A combination of potential and proven experience could be the perfect recipe for Clement to mount an attack on Celtic next season.

In other Rangers news, a ‘huge’ Kenny McLean to Rangers transfer update has emerged.
