Stefan Borson: Aston Villa have 'big issue' with agreeing '£50m' Gallagher deal

Aston Villa would have to pay £10million amortisation payments if they strike a £50million deal for Conor Gallagher this summer.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Villa do not have much leeway to spend this summer without breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Villa are understood to be on the brink of breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules after posting losses of £119million in their 2022-23 accounts.

The Birmingham side are set to profit from their Champions League qualification but also must reduce their summer budget to ensure they do not exceed the allowable losses of £105million.

As revealed by Football Insider, Villa have held talks over a potential deal for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher with Tottenham biding their time before submitting an offer.

Borson explained that Villa have “big” PSR issues as any deals will add to their growing amortisation fees.

“It’s likely that Aston Villa will want to invest in the squad this summer,” Borson told Football Insider.

“However, that is going to drive up amortisation costs in the year.

“Look at somebody like Conor Gallagher who they’re talking about – if they buy Gallagher for £50million before or on the 30th of June and have his full amortisation in for next year then that increases their amortisation by £10million per season.

“They do not currently have a huge amount of leeway within their PSR limit.

“So Villa do have some big issues.“
