Newcastle to sign 'the best players' after dramatic twist - ex-PL CEO

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed fans of clubs like Newcastle United will pay the price if Premier League financial rules are abolished.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed clubs with “the biggest pockets will get the best players” – but warned costs will be passed onto fans.

In arbitration starting this week, Man City are seeking to scrap Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules – which the club claims are unlawful.

APT rules currently prevent Premier League clubs from inflating commercial deals to boost revenue.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (8 June) that Man City will have unlimited spending power if they win their case against the top flight.

Newcastle fans to pay the price if Man City legal challenge is successful, says Wyness

City and Newcastle are the only two Premier League sides owned by nation-states, with French giants Paris Saint-Germain also state-owned since 2011.

When asked what a legal victory for City would mean for the wider Premier League, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It would mean no PSR, no budget restrictions, you just go for it – and it becomes a free-for-all.

“Whoever has the biggest pockets will get the best players, the likes of Newcastle. The biggest winners, apart from the lawyers, will be the players – the salaries will just go up and up.

“Of course, that means the other costs will be passed onto the fans.

“Ticket prices will go up. Broadcasting will struggle to keep up, so it’ll be a bad effect for the game in general.

“I think we’ve reached a good level right now, and things still need to be regulated to keep the financial side in control.”
