Keith Wyness: Everton third points deduction 'will go ahead' despite new twist

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the Premier League “will go ahead” with a potential third points deduction even if Man City are successful with their new legal challenge.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Toffees will face punishment if they breached Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2023-24 season.

In arbitration which kicked off on Monday (10 June), Man City are attempting to end the Premier League’s Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules in the latest top-flight twist.

Under APT rules, clubs are prevented from inflating commercial deals with owner-linked companies as current agreements are assessed to be of fair market value.

The regulations are not directly linked to PSR but clubs will be effectively able to avoid financial breaches by inflating sponsorships to ensure they don’t make a loss of more than £105million over three years.

Everton may have to live with new points deduction, says Wyness

Wyness claimed Everton will have to live with the consequences of any breach the club may have committed in the 2023-24 campaign.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think City’s challenge will have any bearing on Everton’s third potential PSR breach.

“The Premier League will clearly be looking at the figures as they happen against the current rules.

“I don’t think any changes going forward will change that.

“So this third case against Everton, as pointless as it is, will go ahead because it’s under the third rules.

“In this case, I do feel sorry for the Premier League. I’ve criticised them in the past, but this is Man City just acting in very bad faith.

“It’s a legal minefield they’re in right now.”
