Everton head coach Sean Dyche is keen to sign Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi on a free transfer this summer, according to TEAMtalk.
The report [9 June] states that Ndidi is viewed as the “ideal replacement” at Goodison Park if Amadou Onana is sold.
Dyche is said to have personally asked Kevin Thelwell to sign the player, with an offer now being readied.
The defensive midfielder – who can also fill in at centre-back – was previously described as “brilliant” by former Foxes defender Steve Walsh.
Would Wilfred Ndidi be a good signing for Everton?
Signing Ndidi on a free transfer would be a superb deal for Everton.
The 27-year-old boasts a wealth of Premier League experience with Leicester, racking up 192 appearances in the competition, and was part of the Foxes’ European campaigns in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League.
The defensive midfielder was deployed slightly further forward last season under Enzo Maresca, honing his game in more advanced areas as he accumulated four goals and five assists in 32 Championship appearances.
That is also evidenced by the surprisingly high positions he took up, averaging 4.57 touches in the penalty area per 90 in the English second tier in 2023/24, as well as receiving an average of 6.9 progressive passes per game [FBref].
That combination of versatility, quality and experience would likely make the Nigerian an excellent signing – particularly as a free agent – as Dyche attempts to keep Everton afloat once more next term amid their significant financial and off-field issues.
