'Just because...' - Keown doubles down on 'Pretty Rubbish' Rangers claim

Gary Keown has stirred the pot with his latest critique of both Rangers and Celtic.

He claimed that despite their recent achievements, both clubs are falling short of expectations.

In a tweet on Sunday (July 7), Keown said: “Just because one team won a double and the other doesn’t have a ground to play in, that doesn’t mean both sides of the Old Firm aren’t pretty rubbish.”

That came after he insisted in an article he wrote for the Daily Mail [6 July] that “Old Firm fans need to start asking more from their clubs”.

Keown added: “Blind faith will get you nowhere. The reality is this: supporters of Celtic and Rangers don’t ask anything like enough of those in charge of the teams they support – but they most definitely ought to start.”

Are Rangers and Celtic really “rubbish”?

Keown’s bold claim that Rangers and Celtic are “pretty rubbish” might make the fans think twice. Both teams have proud histories and loyal supporters, but Keown may have a point to an extent.

Despite Celtic winning trophies and Rangers doing well-ish in Europe, there are big problems. Celtic can’t get their recruitment right, Rangers are struggling with their stadium, and some fans are often too loyal, potentially ignoring these serious issues.

Keown wants fans to expect more from their clubs. Winning at home isn’t enough; they need to do well in Europe and be better run off the pitch.

The intense environment of the Old Firm should push the clubs to be better, not just in the short term but also the long term.

Both teams can achieve great things, but fans need to ask for higher standards and better management.

In other Rangers news, a multi-million pound “marquee signing” is expected to justify his transfer fee next season with goals.
