Dan Bardell: Tottenham to rely on player sale after 'Gratifying' admission already

Dan Bardell believes Tottenham Hotspur may rely on selling Emerson Royal to sign a fullback this summer with a move to AC Milan being discussed.

In a recent interview, transcribed by Gazzetta (24 June), the Brazilian has spoken out on the “very gratifying” interest from the Italian giants.

He said: “Knowing that teams like this are following me makes me very happy.”

He wants the move away from Spurs this summer with Milan setting their sights on a deal worth up to £15.2million [Football Italia].

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has suggested that pushing a sale through could be important to sign a full-back this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell said: “The way that the market is right now, nobody is going to be splashing the cash.

“Spurs are probably in a better position than most but it is still difficult to sell players as there aren’t many teams in strong financial positions.

“I can see why a deal to AC Milan is taking so long but if they can’t sell Emerson Royal, it is difficult to buy a new fullback.

“They will probably rely on selling him this summer to sign a replacement who is closer to what Ange Postecoglou wants.“

Spurs will need new fullbacks this summer as it was one area where there was a clear drop from the starters to the backups.

When Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro were absent, the likes of Royal and Ben Davies couldn’t fulfil the role to the same level.

With that being said, this summer Ange Postecoglou will look to make additions in that area to add strength in depth to his squad.

Royal has proved to be a signing that hasn’t gone to plan and hasn’t featured much as a regular starter throughout his time in North London.

Porro has proved to be a much better acquisition since joining from Sporting Lisbon after finding his feet last season.

The Brazilian does have some useful qualities but he has never shown them consistently and doesn’t fit the tactical set-up right now.

A sale, with AC Milan interested, makes sense for both parties this summer.
