Dan Bardell suggests more 'Obvious' Tottenham transfer amid forward link

Tottenham being interested in a move for Lille ace Jonathan David is understandable even if signing Ivan Toney is a more “obvious” option, Dan Bardell has said.

The Guardian reported (25 June) that Spurs are set to challenge the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and West Ham for the Canadian international, who is entering the final year of his contract with the Ligue 1 side.

Dharmesh Sheth suggested (26 June) that he could be available for a fee between £20m and £25m this summer once he returns from his Copa America duties.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has suggested Tottenham want a number nine and, while accepting there is a case to be made for David, he thinks reports they want to sign Toney (Football Transfers, 18 June) make more sense.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell said: “He is a player who would carry a sizable fee. He’s been linked with a move away for years now.

“I think Spurs need a new centre forward and even with Timo Werner coming in I think there’s still room to operate in the market for a number nine.

“I can see why David would be an option, he’s done really well in France. I imagine Spurs have a few options that they will be looking at and if David is available that would be a good deal.

“I still think that Ivan Toney to Spurs is a more obvious move.“

Ange Postecoglou will want to add a recognised striker to his squad this summer after a season without one last year.

Son Heung-min was utilised through the centre and had a superb season where he scored 17 and assisted 10 across 35 Premier League appearances [FotMob], while Richarlison was also utilised as the central striker option.

Timo Werner came in, in January but featured primarily as a wide man and has now signed on a permanent basis.

Signing David could be a positive piece of business, especially considering he only has a year remaining on his current deal in France.

This could see him be available on a cheaper deal than has been reported in recent years and might be a good alternative for Tottenham.

Moreover, he is a versatile option who can also operate out wide should Postecoglou want to use him in that role.

Toney continues to be linked with Spurs and might represent an option more suited to the Premier League but he might command a more sizeable fee.
