Dan Bardell urges Tottenham to sign 'Replica' Manchester City player now

Dan Bardell has urged Tottenham to sign Yan Couto from Manchester City this summer as a backup option for Pedro Porro next season.

A report from Fichajes (25 June) has suggested that Spurs are set to go head-to-head with Aston Villa to sign the Brazilian full-back.

The Villans’ proposals could exceed £29million this summer so Ange Postecoglou would have to find more than that to purchase the 22-year-old.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes Tottenham could find a perfect backup option for Porro this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell said: “He’s almost a replica of Porro and has followed a similar route with Manchester City.

“Couto is almost a winger come full back and that is how I see Porro as well. I rate him so highly I think he was so good for Tottenham last season and when he wasn’t there it was obvious that they didn’t have a replacement option.

“Couto is a great ball carrier, passer and crosser so, like Porro, he carries that vision that Postecoglou wants in that position.

“Couto fits the profile for their transfer strategy so I can see why Spurs would push forward with the deal. Even if it is a lot of money he would instantly improve the squad.“

Last campaign, the drop-off from Porro and Destiny Udogie to the other full-back options in the squad was quite sizable.

Towards the end of the season when they both missed games through injury, the form of Spurs slowed down and was frustrating.

This summer Postecoglou needs to bring in some alternative options which can make his squad better as a whole ahead of European football.

Couto has just come off the back of a season with Girona where he has helped the La Liga outfit achieve Champions League qualification.

As part of the City Group, he is owned by Man City and will return to the Etihad this summer with a move away looking most likely.

As a backup option to Porro, Spurs could find a perfect option although there are questions over whether or not he wants to play Champions League football.

He wouldn’t be a guaranteed starter at Tottenham so it will be interesting to see if he makes the move to North London this summer.
